Warnings while in Costa Rica PDF Print E-mail

Adults entering the country are allowed 500 g of tobacco, 5 liters of duty free wine or spirits, and 2 kg of candies or dainties.

Statistically, Costa Rica has a low crime rate in comparison to many other countries. On the other hand, as it happens in most places, tourists are better targets for petty theft than local citizens, so please don't show large amounts of cash or flashy jewelry. Remember that San Jose as any other capital city, also has this petty theft problem. Never leave belongings on sight in your car, even if you locked the car.

We strongly advise you NOT to bring US one-hundred-dollar bills. Central America has been inundated with false bills and you will find everyone, including the banks, unwilling to accept them. In fact, the banks are likely to confiscate them. Stick with smaller denomination bills, traveler's checks or credit cards. Be sure the bills you bring are in good condition. Small tears or missing pieces will render them useless in this country.

I will be traveling to CR soon and was wondering what the exchange rate is with american $ to $ in CR? What is the name of $$ in CR? Also, I would like to be able to communicate via phone with family in the US, what is the best way(most reliable, not super expensive) way to do this? Thanks

The name of the money in Costa Rica is the Colon (co-loan) or colones in plural. The exchange rate I would say is about 575 colones for $1. (Please excuse me if that is not correct) And to communicate with family, I am not sure, but you can try installing a program on a laptop if you have one so you can also video chat. Hope this helps! :)

I want to send my 16 year old daughter on a study abroad trip to costa rica where she stays in the home
with families.

This idea seems basically frightening to me. Does any one know if the culture/environment is basically
free of violence?

I lived abroad at 18, as an AFS student. It changed my life forever. Nothing will compare to your daughter's education abroad. If she listens to her host family, she should be able to stay safe. The only caution I would have is whether she is of strong character. Youth can be influenced strongly when they're so far from home, or they can influence others positively, depending upon their level of maturity. That's something only you and your daughter can answer. Students who travelled abroad when I did either came back changed for the good (very grown up) or the bad (became major party-goers.) It all depended upon their maturity level and what their character was like before they left home. Good luck!
