Your hotel/bed and breakfast in Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui. We are Henk and Carolien Peters- van Duijnhoven, married in '92, we have no children, but we have two dogs.
We are both born in Groesbeek, in the Netherlands. Henk has worked for 22 years at Philips, Carolien has had her doggroomingshop and was a vetassistence.
In 2000 we first learned about the beautiful Costa Rica when we had a holiday here. We were in love with the country right away and loved the beautiful nature, animals and friendly people.
Heliconia Island is a 5 acre garden, surrounded by two rivers. The botanical garden is very nice designed. You can find most heliconias and relatives to heliconias, such as gingers, bananas, calatheas and marantas. At the points of the island are two trails through the pieces of jungle.
Heliconiaisland is a birdwatchers paradise and a group of howler monkeys found their home here too. It is possible to spot iguanas, sloth's, tree porcupine's, armadillos and opossums.
The new cabins have a hexagon shape and are build on columns. They have air conditioning or a ventilator and hot showers.
It is pleasant to relax on the veranda with a view over the garden. In the open restaurant guests enjoy their breakfast or diner, while watching the river and the birds.
Carolien gives tours through the garden with explanation about the plants and animals. Guests who stay overnight can have the tour for free.
The boat trip from the island to Puerto Viejo the Sarapiqui is a two hour relaxing joy in nature.
You will be amazed by the monkeys, butterflies, sloth's, turtles, crocodiles and the great variety of birds, plants and trees.
Our guests shall feel at home on Heliconia lsland, the atmosphere is private. You feel like your on visit with family and have an amazing time with all the sounds and sights of nature.
