Costa Rica - Mapache Costa Rica Rent a Car

I had prepaid for a 10 day car rental , nothing else was to be due . When I went to pick up the car the Mapache agent told me there was going to be an additional $750 hold on my credit card for a deposit . When I said no they said they could drop the deposit to $100 if I bought more insurance FROM THEM for another $99.00 . Just to get started on our vacation I agreed . When I returned the car I was told that I owed $14 for gas , that was fair . I gave them my credit card to pay for the gas I was told by the Mapache agent , Roberto , that it had to be in cash . If I wanted to charge it , it would be $99 ( $99 seems to be their magig number ) . Roberto then tried to charge me another $99 for the insurance that I had already paid for when I picked up the car . and has yet to return my deposit . BEWARE of Mapache . My experience with them was very bad .

We rented from Mapache while on our honeymoon in Costa Rica and they completely screwed us over. I would not recommend using them to anyone. They gave us an old car that ended up over heating. We pulled over immeditately and were stranded on the side of the road for 5 hours losing a day of our vacation. They brought us a new car and told us everything was fine. When we got back home we discovered they had charged our credit card $2300 for a new engine. When we disputed the charge with AMEX they sent them tampered documents. They took the documents we signed for the car rental and altered them so that it looked like we authorized the charge. We never signed anything authorizing the charge. This is a lot of money and we feel completely hopeless!
