Let's all move forward
Today I am very optimistic. It is almost the end of the 21 st century's first decade and we are finally addressing the ever important environmental issues. Each day we take steps forward in implementing the change that has been needed for a long time.

ImageCurrently, we see hybrid vehicles on the streets and we know that by 2010, a series of high performance electric vehicles will be on the market; a strong and positive step toward distancing ourselves from our addiction to oil.

I am also happy to see that solar and wind power technology are becoming more efficient and accessible to the common market. Today, the number of governments that turn their back on ecological problems is shrinking, while the number that decides to face them with decision and concrete action grows.

Regardless of whether it's due to noble efforts or to simple political convenience, the reality is that governments and businesses around the world have placed environmental items on their agendas. The motive is not as important as the results that are attained in the end.

There are many more signs today than there were 10 years ago which indicate that man has finally decided to drastically improve their relationship with nature. A great example of how the world is adapting is witnessed by Leonardo Di Caprio's actions.

Di Caprio stated that from now on he is only going to use hybrid automobiles and he has converted all of his properties to be more environmentally friendly. This may seem like an isolated example, but in reality, such actions have become a growing trend among the most affluent people.

When internationally famous people who can afford luxurious mansions with the most expensive finishing, decide to do things in a more responsible manner, they send a message to the public.

ImageCelebrities are able to influence many people's behaviors, and such positive actions will only lead to similar positive improvements on behalf of society as a whole.

Meanwhile, Costa Rica is also embracing many positive changes. Private participation has become more prevalent as people are continually more and more interested in finding viable solutions for environmental management and protection. Though there is always debate about the "right" way to be environmentally friendly, in the end, the final results are always positive.

Whether it is due to individual attitudinal changes or due to large-scale international and global efforts, almost 10 years from the commencement of this century, we are taking steps in the right direction.

Today, after years of denial and reluctance to change, I am proud to witness the ever shifting attitudes of human beings toward their environment. These changes were necessary and will lead to many positive outcomes. Get the "fever", and join the millions around the world that have finally decided to be a part of the change.
