Tenorio Volcano Costa Rica
Tenorio Volcano
Located in Guanacaste's Cordillera Volcanica, this park features several life zones, including low montane rainforest, very wet tropical forest and very wet premontane forest. Its maximum altitude is 1,916 meters above sea level. Plant species include palms, ferns, bromeliads and orchids. In terms of animals, there are white-faced and Congo monkeys, giant anteaters, pumas, tapirs and peccaries. Birds include a variety of trogon birds and bellbirds.

The park offers parking, drinking water, outhouses, researcher accommodations, information, trails and viewpoints that allow visitors to enjoy its features. These attractions and the hot springs are located not far from the administrative office, and are connected by a trail called Misterios del Tenorio (Mysteries of Tenorio). It is simply wonderful to swim in the sky-blue river, and to take in the park's natural environs.

El Tenorio consists of four volcanic cones and other structures like volcanic domes and pyroclastic cones, and of twin craters known as Montezuma Volcano. Several easily recognizable lava flows have emanated from the cones of Tenorio-Montezuma. Nowadays, there is fumarole activity on the northeast flank at 965 m in the place known as Las Quemadas. There are also thermal points 1 km north of the former at a place known as La Casa, and also on the edges of the Roble river at a place called Hevideros. Studies are currently being carried out to take advantage of the geothermal energy in the area surrounding this volcano.

Tenorio Volcano National Park is only accessible by a path that goes to the top; the highway that passes closest to the volcano is the one that joins Upala with the Panamerican Highway.

This is wild country. The upper regions of the park have never been explored. Lodges located near the base of Tenorio offer horseback and hiking tours through the protected forests for close-up views of the abundant wildlife in the area. Schedule you visit for January and February if you can. You'll avoid the wind and rain
