The whales and dolphins that swim through Costa Rican waters at different times of the year have become an attractive magnet for tour operators, who receive juicy income that increases with each season.
The environmental foundation Promar announced that during 2006 and 2007, the operators reported income of 5.32 million dollars, an amount 42 times higher than what they received in 1990 when this activity started in Costa Rica.
During those two years, a total of 77,000 tourists, nationals and foreigners, toured the coastal waters of the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans to observe 29 of 85 species of cetaceous that exist in the world.
