Coco Island could become one of the new Seven Wonders of the World, a distinction that would attract hundreds of tourists, donations, and researchers to this Costa Rican national park.

The voting to determine the new Seven Wonders of the World began this past January and will continue until December 31st of this year on the foundation’s page:
www.new7wonders.com.
People from around the world can submit their vote and choose their 7 favorite destinations.
In January of next year, a panel of experts will count the votes and create a list of 21 finalists, which the public will vote for throughout 2009. Finally, around the middle of 2010, the new seven natural wonders will be revealed.
Those who wish to vote for Coco Island must go to the foundation’s website then, on the world map, click South America (Costa Rica was listed here), find Coco Island in the list and click it again. Finally, click on the link, “Vote now for Coco Island.” This will take you to the voting form.

Hammerhead Shark
The land area of the island is 9.2 mi², and the protected marine ecosystem is 77 mi². Almost 1,000 species of flora and fauna have been identified.
The Island has been part of the Humanity Natural Patrimony since 1997. In 1999 it was included in the list of Ramsar’s Wetlands of International Importance.
