The small hotels of Central America are coming together with the purpose of competing with the great hotel chains.
As part of their strategy, companies opt for a more personalized service and a higher quality to be able to grow in the market. In the Central American region hotel capacity is mainly composed of small and medium size hotels.
Víctor Valverde, president of the Association of Small Hotels of Costa Rica, noted that the strategy for growth lies on regional union.
”We know that it’s not so easy to compete with these great chains, but if we’re in a strategic alliance we may search for better markets and also offer better services”, said Valverde, who added that the measures include a differential service in the mass attention of visitors. This implies a direct dealing with the client, a warm attention and travel facilities.
The Costa Rican Tourist Board (ICT) registers some 35 small hotels in the country, located in the capital, San José; la Fortuna de San Carlos in the North area of the country, Golfito on the South Pacific and in the province of Guanacaste. Most of those demanding this alternative are business travellers and ecotourists.
The small hotels present an average occupation of 80% during the year. The increase in the quality standards is one of the sector’s goals in all of the region.
