This is about a new opportunity for both national and foreign people to get to know this historic site and experience the natural beauty that it offers. The new guideline allows compliance with the specific purposes of the 5469 Act by releasing 5.5% of the current land area of the island.

This space will serve the tourism development in a sustainable manner with low-impact projects and density. In addition it creates the conditions to restore, maintain and promote the former facilities of the prison on the island of St. Lukas, without damaging forest areas and its biodiversity, said Carlos Ricardo Benavides, Minister of Tourism. Benavides added, For many years the opportunity for Costa Ricans to have access to the Islands historical heritage has been denied.

IMAS Costa RicaAt last we can provide that opportunity along with the experience that combines cultural, historical and natural beauty, with an additional important campaign that uses the generated resources to benefit the National Children's Hospital, the IMAS and Social Adaptation.

With regard to the type of development that will be implemented under the administration of the municipality of Puntarenas and proposals of the Costa Rican Institute of Tourism, it is expected to enable the sector known as Cocos Beach, to build a historical center that will allow the development of cultural events as well as small businesses, services, restaurants and a trail for tourists.
