One of the advantages of staying in Liberia, is that you can get to a lot of spots from here in a matter of short time, in any direction. In some sense, Liberia is kind of a hub in Guanacaste, and you can even get here directly on an airplane, and land on the Liberia International Airport, located ten minutes south-west from Liberia. There are so many places to visit in Guanacaste, from the most beautiful beaches to volcanoes and the dry forest.

We started our travel in Playas del Coco, a beautiful town 25 miles west from Liberia. It has a busy beach, perfect for sport fishing and scuba diving. It is the entrance point to the famous Point Ollie’s and Witches Rock, where we expect to get the best waves in our Costa Rica surfing trip. It’s far from a quiet spot, and it’s more of an active, vibrant town with a lot of commercial activity and a blooming nightlife. The horseshoe shaped beach is perfect for having fun, and it offers breathtaking views with a lot of cliffs surrounding it, perfect for a Costa Rica hiking tour.

Infrastructure is good in Playas del Coco, and we found paved streets, illuminated public zones, sidewalks, green zones and a clean beach. We also found practically any service that we needed, such as restaurants, supermarkets, equipment rentals and bars. There are medical practices, banks, souvenir stores, a post office and a police station. I think you can stay here for days without missing anything from the city. There are cheap Costa Rica hotels but also a lot of different lodges and villas.

Before heading out to Witch Rock on the next morning, we went diving at El Coco. The tour is made 15 minutes from the beach. It is an amazing experience, with so many creatures living underwater, such as turtles, small sharks, octopuses, sea horses and several types of rays. I recommend this experience. On our way back, we saw whales and dolphins. It’s one of the best tours in Costa Rica. There is so much to do at Playas del Coco, that I think I’ll stay a bit longer than I originally planned. I’ll let you know how it turns out.
