“Un Día Lejano” is the third studio album from Malpaís, and the fourth of its career. Malpaís is a Costa Rican group with the following members: Iván Rodríguez (violinist), Gilberto Jarquín (drummer), Fidel Gamboa (lead singer and guitarist), his brother Jaime (composer and bass player), Manuel Obregón (pianist), Carlos “Tapado” Vargas (percussionist), and Daniela Rodríguez the new innovation of the group (singer and Iván’s daughter).
Some of the members of this group have passed through groups like Grupo Experimental or Editus in which they worked with Ruben Blades in 2001. In 2007, Malpaís got gold and platinum records for two studio albums. They also have won 3 ACAM awards to the Costa Rican music and several certifications for number one hits on the radio.
This new album took almost 3 years in the composition process and 5 years to get to the final result “Un Día Lejano”; with songs such as “El Bazar de Urías”, “Rosa de un Día” and “¿Bolero, yo?”. These songs were included in the 2006 album “Malpaís en Vivo” in which the songs were recorded live, but this time they were recorded in a studio.
At the beginning the concept was to create the album with all the songs that were not included in previous records. They also composed more and more songs. At the end they have more songs than they were expecting. These are going to be incorporated into the next album.
This album represents a blend of different rhythms such as salsa, calypso, Peruvian and Guanacaste sounds, and a sound never explored by the group: rock.
