Hoteliers expect that the expansion starts so the zone’s economy re-activates. After the constant delays, in October the remodeling will start in the airport Daniel Oduber in Liberia, Guanacaste. The whole work will have a cost of $34 million which $27 million will be part of the new terminal building construction and other $7 million to furnish the new lobbies.
If there are no inconvenient the expansion will be ready in July 2011.
The arrangements in the Daniel Oduber Airport have as a main objective to expand the airstrip and the airplane movement’s areas, in order to have more space for the bigger and heavier aircrafts.
The need of the new terminal in Liberia was seen since the airport opened the possibility to receive international flights.
From that moment, the demand grew 20% thank to the commercial flights. Likewise, it is expected when the airstrip is bigger, other airlines offer flights from Liberia to South America, because actually there are only flights to the United States.
That is the case of Copa Airlines, enterprise that has manifested its intention to use this terminal to expand its operations, explained Ana Saborío, president of the Guanacaste Tourism Chamber. The possibility that in June 2011 is achieved the expansion of Daniel Oduber full of optimism from the Guanacaste entrepreneurs, because it will be translated into a major flow of tourists.
However, they are cautious about the beginning and finishing dates, due to some past works haven’t accomplished them.
We have to wait for the plans revision to be completed for the construction to start in October and generate better conditions for the tourist”, said Saborío.
Once they are finished the benefits of the industry will be evident, added Saborío. After the bad times in the region, the initiation of the remodeling will be an important step for businesses, because the delay of the airport’s works have made tourism not to develop adequately in Guanacaste, manifested Sammy Weisleder, co-director of Solarium Tech Park.
It is vital to start as soon as possible, there is a need to re-activate the economy and strengthen a province that has been forgotten lately”, indicated Ricardo Castro, manager of Edica Limitada, enterprise participating in the Liberia terminal remodeling.
