It's already 60 years without an army! |

At the beginning of December 2008, Costa Rica celebrated 60 years since the abolition of its army, decreed the 1st of December 1948 by then president Jose Figueres Ferrer.
 Jose Figueres Ferrer The celebration took place at the National Museum with the presence of Figueres' widow, authorities, students and some ex-combatants of the Civil War of 1948, which was the last military dispute registered in Costa Rica.
Along with abolishing the army, Figueres also made a commitment to channel from this more resources to the health, education and social welfare of the country, marking the great difference from the rest of the region. 60 years ago, Costa Rica opted for non-violence. 60 years ago, Costa Rica declared peace to the world.
