Thousands of people around the world voted for Isla del Coco in the first stage of the competition to select the seven new natural wonders of the world. On January 7, the New7Wonders Foundation announced the outcome of the first phase of the vote, through which a representative site for each country was chosen.
According to the votes received through December 31, 2008, Isla del Coco was one of the finalists. Of the 441 participants, 260 were chosen and 181 were eliminated from the competition. In the case of Costa Rica, Arenal Volcano was eliminated, and Isla del Coco will now compete for the nation in this virtual contest.
Voting will continue until July 7 to select the 21 finalists from around the world. Results will be announced on July 21. After that, the long-awaited final and definitive voting for the seven new natural wonders will continue throughout the remainder of 2009, all 2010 and part of 2011.
July is the next deadline for Isla del Coco—natural treasure, national park and World Heritage site—to continue in the competition. NatureAir invites you to be part of our country's effort by visiting the Web site to vote at www.new7wonders.com.
