The absorbing afro-caribbean culture (mainly a combination of Jamaican, Italian and Chinese immigrants) of this region fills the atmosphere with fragrances, tropical rhythms and brilliant colors. The appearance of Limon is transformed this October, when the essence of this remarkable province is focused on ten days of history, culture and celebration. The Limon Carnival is considered one of the most famous activities of the country and hundreds of people visit this province to enjoy it.

In this event, many dancers merge with the curious and fill the streets hoping to see the “comparsas”, which are groups of people with colorful costumes, specialized in tropical rhythms and penetrating percussion.

The Costa Rican Caribbean has much more to offer to its visitors, the exotic and beautiful beaches filled with clear sand and blue sea are perfect to relax your mind and body.� Below is a list of some of our Caribbean beaches:

Playa Barra de Colorado: Located in the province of Limon, is part of the National Wildlife Refuge Barra del Colorado. With dark sand and strong waves it is ideal for hiking, watch wildlife and sport fishing. The beauty of the beach and the landscapes combines with its tranquility.

Playa Cahuita: Located 49 km from the province of Limon. For its beauty, is considered one of the most splendid beaches of the Costa Rican coast. It has excellent tourist spot and has some good lodging facilities.

Playa Manzanillo: Situated in the province of Limon. Driving to the end of the road that connects Puerto Viejo and other beaches in this area, you will find Manzanillo. It is perfect for a relaxing swim; this beach has beautiful gold sand.

Playa Negra, Puerto Viejo: It is located in Talamanca, half mile away from Puerto Viejo town. Its extensive and abundant vegetation typical of the tropics presents some coral formations; this is a good destination for surfers.

Puerto Viejo y Cocles:� It is placed in the south part of the province, this clear sand beach offers coral reefs in the middle and it is a magnificent relaxed place. In this area there many tourist services and activities to offer to its guests, including rental stores surfboards, mountain bikes and different tours around the area.

About the Carnivals:

What it is: The Limon Carnival is a celebration of the Day of Cultures.

When: From Thursday 11 to Monday 22 of October.

How to get there: From San Jose, take Highway 32 to Limon. The Carnival takes place in Limon downtown.

If you go: Make reservations at hotels near Limon, and after the party you can stay longer and visit Cahuita or Puerto Viejo.
