Costa Rica is in the third place worldwide in natural resources management and the pollution attack. This document is produced every two years by experts of the Universities of Yale and Columbia (United States), with the information obtained from the United Nations or requested to each country from the edition of the Index 2010 presented in Davos, Switzerland.

According to the press release, this result shows that Costa Rica, Iceland and Switzerland have done
substantial investments in environmental infrastructure, pollution control and designed politics to achieve sustainability in long terms.
WHY? After an evaluation of 25 different indicators, Costa Rica obtained a score of 86.4 out of 100. The country is below Iceland (93.5) and Switzerland (89.1).

Costa Rica Other countries of the Latin America region which obtained a relevant spot Cuba (78,1),Colombia(76,8), Chile (73,3) y Panama (71,4). In Central America, Nicaragua got a 57, Honduras 49,9, El Salvador 69,1 and Guatemala 54. In the last places we find mostly the African countries and Haiti with a score of 39,5.

Among the studied variables in the 163 countries there was the influence of the environment in the health of the population, quality of the air, water resource management, biodiversity, fishing, farming, forests, and actions against the greenhouse effect. Costa Rica obtained 100 (perfect score) in forests.

Assimilation. Pedro León, director of the governmental initiative Peace with Nature, showed satisfaction by the result, but he accepted that there are several issues the country must improve. Bernardo Aguilar, Executive Director of Neotropica Foundation, asked to take into account that there are several topics that this indicator doesn’t evaluate.
For example, the mine concessions, one of the biggest issues in the public eye,” commented Aguilar.
One of the topics Costa Rica isn’r paying good attention is the marine protection, because 26% of our physical land is protected and only 1% of the marine areas. The same goes for hydrocarbons burning by industry and automobiles”, commented Leon.
