Communities for retired people will generate $340 million PDF Print E-mail
The country is preparing to develop pan industry of communities for foreign retired people, by taking the competitive advantages in the areas of health, tourism, real estate, security and transportation, among others.

This was the announcement given by the National Program of Competitiveness and Regulatory Improvement (Pronacomer, in Spanish), the Ministry of Exterior Commerce, Ministry of Health, the Costa Rican Coalition of Inititiative for Development (Cinde) and the Association Counseling for the International Medicine Promotion of Costa Rica (Promed).

The communities for retired people are residential projects for senior citizens that offer integral and personalized services in medical attention, domestic service, transportation and nursery, depending to the needs of the inhabitants. They also get involve all aspects related to development of research centers, high quality recreational centers, theme parks, pharmaceutical industry.

Investment and employment

The initial target market will be composed by middle class to high class professional citizens from the United States, Canada and Spain, places where there is the highest registration of retired people who decide to establish themselves in other latitudes. It is estimated that the development of the Health Cities in the country could generate $340 millions annually. So, the attention of a population of 10,000 retirees will produce 40,000 annual jobs; 10,000 direct jobs in the areas of construction, architecture, engineering, security, administration and health services.

Indirectly, there will be at least 30,000 positions in commerce, hotels, transportation, restaurants, medical and pharmaceutical products manufactured, banks, cleaning and gardening, among others. In the Central America region, Panama counts with 5 communities of retired citizens and there are 42 in line to get the license for construction. In the case of Costa Rica, there are registered projects in Liberia and in the northwestern area of the Central Valley.
