After a year of being closed due to re-modeling works, the Pre-Colombian Hall of the Costa Rica National Museum re-opens its doors to exhibit its archeological jewels to the Costa Ricans and the foreigners.
The space welcomes the visitors with a museum graphic design, more attractive and modern, that is looking for the union of knowledge and entertainment.
The Pre-Colombian Hall was closed temporarily in August 2008 because of the infiltration and termite problems in the roof, details that were putting in danger valuable pieces of the collection.
Archeological Adventure. With an investment of 47 million colones, the work in the hall included roof reparations, a new light system, a change of paint color on the walls, a new and more dynamic design to appreciate the pieces better.
Also, there were improvements in the graphic aspect to designed big posters with accurate information about the different themes of the expositions.
The new guide exhibits nearly 800 pieces that offer a chronological journey over the different stages of our pre-Colombian history; from the first groups that lived in the Cost Rican territory (10.000 BC) up to the period of contact with the Spaniards in the XVI century, explained Lidilia Arias, Museographer of the Costa Rica National Museum.
All pieces are cleaned, some of them are restored and were given a better show case distribution for the people to observe the details and comprehend the function that our past indigenous habitants gave to them. Now, it’s included three stone pieces from the Diquís zone, that wasn’t been exhibit before, detailed Arias.
Some of the antique pieces of the exhibition are lance tips and other stone tools, ritual metates, mysterious giant spheres, delicate jade ornaments and gold bracelets, ear covers, hangers and ceremonial objects used in rituals. Also, there is information about the social division, burial rites, the relationship between the ornaments and the social levels, and the relationship between animals and the spiritual world.
Learn and play. Younger visitors of the Costa Rica National Museum will have the newest tool to make the journey more beneficial and fun in the pre-Colombian hall. The Costa Rica National Museum and the enterprise Editorama worked together in the design and publication of a didactic guide directed to the infantile audience. The guides will be distributed freely among the children who visit the exposition.
“The publication has the title: Aventura arquelogica (Archeological Adventure). It’s designed to stimulate children to get closer to the archeological treasure in a more entertaining, creative way, far from the traditional vision that is present in the museum visitation: something boring”, explained archeologist and educator Minor Castro, responsible of the guides content. From the first page, the guide challenge children to be archeologists to discover the way our first Costa Rican habitants lived.
We want to promote among the children the capacity to observe forms, details, colors and design to know the people who created the pieces through their work, added the specialist.
With small texts, drawings and photographs, this guide develops topics as the pre-Colombian periods, customs, body decoration that the ancient indigenous had, social organization, work, feeding, architecture and religious ceremonies. Each chapter is joined with activities such as crosswords puzzles, and different games to make learning more entertaining.
