Nearly three years after the launch of the first electric car in the country, only 61 such vehicles, drive on the roads in Costa Rica. Of these, 30 belong to companies, embassies and universities and only 31 were bought by individuals that love to make some costa rica travel around the country.

These electric cars dont use fossil fuels and, therefore, do not emit CO2into the atmosphere. Furthermore, a 90% advantage of the energy generated while using combustion engines, which are more than one million, only a 20% advantage.

"In Costa Rica the main source of generation of emissions of greenhouse gases comes from burning fossil fuels for energy, primarily for the transportation sector. This technology reduces emissions rate, "said Rafael Monge, the organization CO2.cr.

The arrival of the model Reva, Mahindra Company, Reva ElectricVehicle, in March 2009 marked the first chapter of zero-emissioncars in Costa Rica. A month and through the introduction of the model had sold 10, "a positive sign," said its promoters. The idea of the ticos is not only have costa rica eco hotels, but also eco vehicles.

The market was extended in February 2011, and Costa Rica became the first country in America where the company marketed the Mitsubishi iMiEV, the electric vehicle.

However, after that period, the electric car sales fell from an average of five to less than two per month.

"The biggest disappointment has been with the Government, as early work a proposal to give more benefits to buyers and promote the consumption of these technologies, but so far the project has not come to anything," said Sergio Gutierrez Reva CEO.

"The lack of government support makes companies lose interest in bringing these technologies to the country, especially since the production of the models is limited and prefer to focus on other markets where the incentives for these technologies enhance consumption," said Ariel Aizenman, Veinsa manager, distributor of Mitsubishi in the country.
