Tapantí National Wildlife Refuge (11,651 acres / 4,715 hectares) is located in the rugged Talamanca Mountains, and biologically is not very well known. The reserve is crisscrossed by 150 rivers, canyons and waterfalls. It is rainy and humid and vegetation is dense. Although there is a great variety of wildlife, animals are difficult to see, with the exception of some birds and butterflies. Two hundred and eleven species of birds have been sighted, including the quetzal, which nests there in the late spring.
Hiking and camping are permitted and there are facilities for picnics and outdoor cooking. Cabins near the entrance to the refuge are sometimes available. Call ahead to request a guide or to ask about the cabins.
