Randy Sperger is dedicated to seeking a better life for indigenous people, and all the fruit of his business goes to support social outreach projects.
Born American, but now a Costa Rican. Half his life he has spent in that country, and there he has developed a true art in his business, his career is 100 percent dedicated to assuring that those who don't have much can live with dignity.
Randy is a man who believes his task is to enable the paths for people to make their own effort and together they see dreams happen. This is far from being a controlling role or a
paternalistic vision.
His own dreams have been coming to life and giving fruit for a while. Soon after he first arrived in Costa Rica, he started relating with various indigenous groups, and his heartbeat was to help them strive for a better life. It has been difficult because this population has become entrusting of the promises made by outsiders, due to a rough history of abuse, and the many times white people have failed to keep their word in the past.
And what was his action plan? Let's start by saying Randy is a missionary, which means everything he does, he does to serve God, without directly receiving pay for his work . Rather, his goal is for his career to be used so that more people will learn about the teachings of Jesus, and will want to make Him Lord in their own lives. With this vision the project with the indigenous groups came to be.
His strategy is to work with whatever resources are available to the indigenous groups: and they have always worked the land. So he tried convincing them that if they started growing coffee again it could be sold outside the country, at great prices and this would give them a good income to raise their families.
It has been difficult to win their trust, but with time there has been breakthrough, and this year there was a good harvest, and the fruit of their coffee plantations will be sold in the United States as Gourmet Coffee from the mountains of Costa Rica. This will add on to the coffee Randy was already buying from small producers out in the country. Also to be sold in the international market, and with the profit to be able to finance his projects and those of many other missionaries.
The product is called Coffee with a Purpose, and is sold by Green Earth Coffee. Their products can alL be purchased online. What started out as just a dream, is today a small enterprise that is moving full speed ahead and growing under the direction of Randy Sperger, the -gringo" that became a tico, with his big heart surrendered to God.
