Costa Ricans are proud that their country has more teachers than soldiers. Education is a top priority. In fact, Costa Rica was one of the first countries in the world to offer free education to all its children. Nine out of every ten Costa Ricans are literate they can read and write. That's one of the highest literacy rates on the planet!
All kids between the ages of 7 and 14 must attend school. Everybody wears a uniform, which often includes a blue shirt and blue pants or a skirt. At least they newer have to figure out what to wear, t-fight? The school year lasts from March through November. Kids get three months off during the dry summer months.
Costa Rican kids study reading, math, and social studies. Every school teaches the importance of taking care of the environment. Kids learn about protecting the rain forest in their own backyard! Some students attend English-language schools, where only English is spoken. This will help them to get jobs in Costa Rica's booming tourist industry.
