The area around the Sarapiquí River is the perfect location for whitewater rafting. But that's not all. The area is surrounded by tropical jungles filled with monkeys and sloths and crystalline water.

Located near the town of Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí and next to Braulio Carrillo National Park, the river is widely known for its lush vegetation, class-III rapids and a wide range of wildlife. As an alternative to whitewater rafting, many choose to travel by boat through the Sarapiquí River to get to the San Juan River where crocodiles, turtles, and snakes can be seen along the way. Braulio Carrillo National Park
Here you'll find hundreds of species of flora and fauna as well as waterfalls and orchid covered trees that contribute to the tropical nature of Braulio Carrillo. Hiking is excellent here.
La Selva Biological Station
La Selva Biological Station is one of the most important tropical rain forest research sites in the world. It contains 3,900 acres of tropical wet forests with 120 species of mammals, around 2,000 species of plants, 420 species of birds, and 500 species of butterflies.

Car: The Guápiles Highway, which leads to the Caribbean coast, heads north out of downtown San Jose. Turn north before reaching Guápiles on the road to Rio Frio, and continue north through Las Horquetas, passing the turnoffs for Rara Avis, La Selva, and El Gavilán lodges before reaching Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí.
Bus: Terminal del Caribe in San Jose. Buses leave from Calle Central, Ave. 13. 2 hours from San Jose. Buses depart daily.

This 3,000-acre pineapple plantation opens its doors to visitors, where you can experience everything from the farm's dizzying geometric patterns to the packing and processing plant. SCLC
Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center (SCLC) is a non-profit organization founded in the 1990s by the Holbrook family in a beautiful area of tropical lowland rainforest in Chilamate, Sarapiquí. SCLC focuses on Ecotourism with cultural and environmental education, as well as community outreach through English classes, a scholarship program, ecology club, reforestation, local art gallery, GPS community census, and public library. This way ecotourism, culture and education fuse into a project of great importance for the country and the world.
