It is located 264 km from San Jose and you can get to it through Alajuela or Guanacaste; this last option provides an improved road that reaches up to the management office of the volcano. Climbing to the top can be difficult and it takes about two days to reach it; April and May are the recommended months to carry out this trip.
The volcano is 1916m high and due to the different altitudes you can find habitats with different characteristics. For example, on the lower areas you will find trees such as Guanacaste (national tree of Costa Rica), laurel and white cedar, among others. When the altitude increases, vegetation changes, finding short species covered by moss and epiphytes. On the top there is little vegetation due to the ashes, but the view is impressive.
