Eventhough it is located in the province of Puntarenas, this area has its own territory division as a tourist region, due to the efforts in favor of eco preservation and a high concept of harmony and interaction with nature.
The main distribution and service point is the town of Santa Elena, it has several commercial and tourist businesses. Other important points are also the towns of San Luis and San Gerardo. Monterverde Biological Reservoir is the main attraction. It is known world wide for its cloud forest, and as a wild life sanctuary for the tropics of the New World.

Santa Elena Community
This magnificent community, located in the Tilaran Sierra, is a combination of rural area, cobble stone and dirt roads together with the urge of a developing city that offers its visitors a diversity of commercial and tourist services. Santa Elena allows you to enjoy the most extraordinary natural landscape, due to its mild weather and on altitude of i 330mts above sea level
You can get to Monteverde through Tilaran, Las Juntas de Abongares, the Sardinal- Guacimal route, or the traditional Lagarto river road, which has on spectacular view of the Nicoya gulf
The Quaker Community
This group established in the 1950's, and are recognized for its order and interest in preserving their characteristic lifestyle. Moreover their active participation in the caddie and agriculture activities have made them create and develop a dairy mutual association industry, which has contributed in the economy and expansion of the area, as a result the locals have benefit from this.

They have had many achievements among the most highlighted is the creation of a school that shared the education with the Costa Rican colony of Santa Elena, giving space to a bilingual culture, and nowadays it is a strength in providing the proper attention to those nature lovers who visit Monteverde.
Currently there are a few early settlers, but some of their customs are still practice, like the "Meeting", where they use to comment and read for world peace. With great vision they protected the high lands of the Tilaran sierra, and today it has become one of the most visited and well protected areas of Costa Rica. Monteverde Coffee Tour
The great Cooperativa (mutual association) of the San Luis community, opens its doors for all tourists to visit the plantations and coffee treatment plants, where all the process take place. The tour finally ends at a roasting facility where you will taste the end result, a delicious cup of coffee.
San Luis Waterfall
After a short walk, where you will be able to enjoy the most wonderful plant life, you arrive at San Luis waterfall, named after the community. It is on impresive 300 meter water drop, that combined with the natural surroundings presents the perfect scenario for nature lovers.
Monteverde Cheese Factory
This factory is known for its good cheese quality. During your time there it is possible to observe the manufacturing of different dairy products. Visiting schedule: Monday thru Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Bosque Eterno de los Niños (Endless Children's Forest)

This wonderful site represents the largest private reserve in Costa Rica, and the area that is visited in Monterverde is called San Gerardo Biological Station, located 7 km from Santa Elena.
Its territory covers 5km of rain forests trails, and an amazing view of Arena! volcano.
As of today there have been a hundred mammal species and four hundred bird species registered.
