Discover Playa Grande
Located in Santa Cruz, Guanacaste, Playa Grande is a not very well known treasure, one the most beautiful, peaceful and unexplored beaches of the region. White sands and a blue sea form this three kilometer wide coast; the beach has a straight shape towards the south and curved towards the North East before reaching Cabo Velas. It also has a slight down slope towards Playa Blanca and goes slightly upwards towards the north.

Its neighbors, Tamarindo to the south, Cabo Velas and Conchal to the north, have somehow outshined its popularity, turning to be beneficial for tourists looking for tranquility, rest and sun. Getting to Playa Grande is easy at any time of the year since the road is paved from San Jose and a dirt road in relatively good condition will take you to the heart of the town. There is no direct bus service from San Jose to this beach, nevertheless, tourists can take a bus to Santa Cruz and another one to the entrance of the town.
Rates are relatively low and the service, although slightly rustic, will bring you close to your final destination. Also if you wish to make the trip shorter, there is a flight service to Liberia where you will be able to take a cab or some special service.
Marine Sports
The Guanacaste Region has been divided into three large fishing areas: Playa Grande belongs to the northern sector, providing tourists with the opportunity of getting to know a large variety of species by practicing this sport. Marlin, mackerel, rooster fish, mahi mahi, tuna and wahoo are some of the fish you will find while fishing off the shore of Playa Grande.
The most appropriate months to practice this sport are between January and August, although on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, any month of the year can be considered "High Season". Wind, time of the year, water temperature and moon phases are also important when fishing; although this country offers one the most attractive "bites" in the whole world.

And if you wish to ride or rent a boat, at neighboring beaches you will find multiple options to fill your expectations. Diving, wind surfing and surfing are sports that can also be practiced at its shore. Also, if you are a seafood lover, you can find restaurants and small sodas (cafeterias) in the area where you can eat ceviche (fish cocktail), or a fish or seafood soup which will bring you back to life in a second.
Tranquillity under the Sun
If you are planning to sun bath, the warmest months in the Pacific zone are from March until April; although due to the characteristics of Playa Grande, located in the tropical dry forest, you will find a pleasant, sunny weather almost year round. Touristic infrastructure is not too well developed yet, but drinking water, electric power, telephones and basic services are available in this Guanacaste community.
You can also find small and medium sized hotels, cabins, equipped houses and rooms. For those wishing to rest in a place with basic facilities, away from the noise of the city and with a beautiful landscape, Playa Grande could be exactly what they have been looking for.
