Isla Tortuga
Located in the Gulf Nicoya, just two miles offshore, this island paradise makes for a perfect day trip form San Jose, Puntarenas, or other beach towns nearby. To get there, an open boat or catamaran, slips between other small islands until it reaches the coconut palm fringed beach and turquoise waters of the state-owned Tortuga.
Covered in tropical dry forest, there's a 40 minute trail where hikers can observe strangler figs, bromelias, orchids and fruit bearing trees like guanabana (soursop) and maraņon (cashew). The trail leads to a spectacular lookout point.
Visitors can choose among a series of activities during their stay. Sea kayaking, swimming, snorkeling, lounging in the sun, exploring or playing some beach sport, will make for a busy and exciting day.
A natural phenomenon
A delicate strip of land, broken and separated from the mainland, is a short 3 miles before the town of Quepos. Damas Island can be reached by water or by land, crossing the narrow estuary that subtly sets this world apart from the rest.
