Located on the Central Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, only a 90-minute drive from the international airport in Alajuela and the capital city of San José, Garabito continues to maintain its status as the fastest growing and most developed tourism region in Costa Rica.

The Municipality of Garabito, founded in 1989, is named for the Indian Chief who fought heroically against Spanish Conquistadores in the 1500's. His war tactics were sophisticated and his kingdom was the largest controlled area in Costa Rica at that time, stretching from Cartago in the Central Valley to its seat of power in the mountains of Carara.
Comprised of 316 square kilometers, Garabito is home to over 20,000 permanent residents, with a floating population of approximately 40,000. The year-round population in the Garabito Region has doubled in the last five years bringing with it a plethora of new businesses and modem services, as well as private learning institutions catering to adults and children alike.
Widely regarded as the most valuable real estate in the country, this beautiful stretch of coastline is bordered by the Pacific Ocean and mountainous primary and secondary rainforest. This seaside 'canton' began attracting international interest in the seventies when artists found the tranquil and splendid surroundings perfect for creative inspiration. Garabito has been host to several international film and television productions including “1492”, filmed on location in Jacó, Herradura and Punta Leona.
Nearly half of Garabito’s residents are expatriates. Jaco Beach, the country seat, is the closet beach town to San José and the most popular vacation destination for nationals and foreigners. It is a perfect base attractions are within a few minutes’ to four hours’ drive.
The eclectic concentration of foreign and local populations brings a cosmopolitan mix of cultural, social, religious, culinary and recreational opportunities.
