Through a genetically improved project, the Association of Sustainable Development of the Atlantic Region (Asirea, in Spanish) will increase the resistance and the efficiency of trees such as teak and acacia. The objective is to impulse and to improve the quality of the reforestation in the Tortuguero Conservational Area.

In 2008, zone farmers, with the Association, planted 89,866 trees in agro-forest systems where trees were combined with crops and cattle. 127 hectares were designated to reforest and other 561 were used for conservation.
For this year the projection is to assign 116 hectares to reforestation and 1,500 for conservation. On the other side, the plantation goal in agro-forest system is about 116,000 trees. The genetic improvement increases the performance and the resistance of the tree through genotype changes.
Asirea is a non-profit organization from the Forest National Bureau which contributes to improve the environment in the Caribbean Zone through natural resources management and the implementation of friendly production alternatives.
