As part of the national efforts to strengthen sustainable tourism, the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT in Spanish) awards the Certificate for Sustainable Tourism (CST in Spanish) to those companies who work hard towards sustainability. The program evaluates each company’s operations and the way they meet the environmentally, culturally and socially friendly practices.

Certificate for Sustainable Tourism Costa RicaThe Certificate recognizes efforts made to protect and respect the physical and biological surroundings; the quality of service, and the positive social-economic impact the company may have in the community. After a careful evaluation, the Institute assigns each company one of the sustainability levels that rank from one to five.

Each level positions responds to specific standards met by the company at the time of the evaluation. For example, Level 1 means that the company has taken the first step towards sustainability. Every following level indicates the advancement of the company towards full sustainability.
