Owners of mom-and-pop businesses in Costa Rica are being trained in sustainable tourism as part of a project aimed at implementing good concepts and supporting a certification process of small and midsize enterprises.
Under the coordination of the Rainforest Alliance and bankrolled by the Inter American Development Bank (BID), the training workshops have been going on since March and will stretch out into late April.
The main idea behind the project is to help carry through the practice of a responsible tourism that guarantees business sustainability and cares for the natural and cultural environment.
The BID and its Multilateral Investment Fund are financing the program in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Belize and Ecuador. In the case of Costa Rica, owners of inns and small hostels will be the primary recipients of the project´s benefits.
All in all, participants are provided with tools and know-how on sustainable tourism, the benefits of environmental protection policies, social and economic programs and ways to enter the coveted sustainability certification process.
