Costa Rican Institution of AqueductsIn order to promote the best conditions in Costa Rican beaches, the Costa Rican Institution of Aqueducts (AyA in Spanish) established the Blue Flag Ecological Program, to honor the resorts that offer the best conditions to residents and vacationers.

The beach communities voluntarily register in the program, and 69 of them underwent tests for cleanliness, safety, tourist information, and other aspects last year. AyA found that 35 of them met the desirable conditions and now fly the blue banner to let visitors know that they offer more than sun, sand and sea.

According to AyA sources, as the program progresses, constant improvement is evident in a growing number of the 380 beaches identified in Costa Rica.
