The Costa Rican Biodiversity Institute (INBio in Spanish) bestowed the Conservation of Biodiversity Award on Alexander Skutch, a U.S. citizen who arrived in Costa Rica 60 years ago.
This is the first time the award is granted, and it extols the life endeavor of a man who is a biologist, a vegetarian, and an ornithologist, and who has dedicated his life to study and preserve a green valley, El General, some 90 miles south of San José.
In his ranch, Los Cusingos, Skutch, a native of Baltimore, has developed vast research on tropical birds and their habitat. He has published over 200 scientific articles and some 30 books.
