Oxo-biodegradable plastic is made at similar cost as the traditional plastic, adding d2w®, an inoffensive additive that allows the decomposition of the links between the carbon atoms. When included in the manufacture of plastic, it causes a quicker decomposition in simple water molecules, carbon dioxide' and a small amount of biomass. Through retardants, optimum properties of the plastic are guaranteed for the necessary time, according to the use the material will be put to.
The drop of water and d2w® are registered trademarks utilized to identify a variety of semi-stiff, flexible plastic products that are completely biodegradable. The useful life of the products d2w® oxo-biodegradable is "planned" during its production and, in general, includes a flexible margin. Various factors can accelerate the degradation that goes between 60 to 90 days, such as sunlight, heat and stress (straightening and breaks).

In Costa Rica, the Monte Verde brand of dairy products, uses this technology in its containers, in contrast with the Dos Pinos brand, most of whose containers are not even recyclable. The example of Monte Verde is one that the rest of the industry should follow and that we, as consumers, must reward and support.
Also, Travel Excellence, a Costa Rican tour operator, provides to all their clients oxo-biodegradable bottles for water and refill containers in their transportation units. Also, all plastic bags used in the Travel Excellence office and in the homes of his collaborators are oxo-biodegradable.
