The protection of Costa Rican forests, particularly those in private hands, will be boosted thanks to a $32.6-million loan from the World Bank and an $8-million donation from the Global Environmental Fund.
The funds will be applied to the Environmental Service Program, that compensates private citizens for preserving the forests in their properties.
The chairman of the board of the Foundation for the Development of the Central Volcanic Mountain Range, Harry Wohlstein, explained, "This loan enables, for the first time in the world, to directly compensate the owners of Costa Rican forests for the service of protecting biodiversity as a benefit for mankind."
