The Costa Rica Ecotourism Chamber (CANAECO) inked an Ethics Code in an effort to increase protection of children and teenagers from sexual exploitation.
The agreement stipulates the commitment of travel companies to announcing that their establishments reject any kind of misconduct against minors and adolescents in terms of sexual exploitation and that they will inform authorities about such acts.
This initiative has been gaining momentum since last year when the Paniamor (Bread & Love) Foundation embarked on collecting signatures among different travel companies.
Other organizations in the country, like hotel chains and car rentals, have joined the initiative spearheaded by the Paniamor Foundation with the support of the Tourism Professionals Association of Costa Rica (ACOPROT) and the National Tour Operators Association (ACOT).
Costa Rica is a leading nation in the field of ecotourism and that's a positive aspect we're very proud of, but we must do everything within our power to protect childhood," said Dunia Jimenez, executive director of the Costa Rica Ecotourism Chamber.
The Paniamor Foundation is a non-profitable private organization that advocates for the rights of people under 18 years of age in Costa Rica.
