Costa Rica has 112 volcanic formations and seven active volcanoes belonging to the Pacific Ring of Fire. The most active volcano in the region is Arenal just a few hours’ drive from the Central Valley. The Arenal region is characterized by fertile soil, lush forest and myriad of hot springs heated by an underground lava flows.
 All of Costa Rica’s Volcanoes belong to the National Park System. Arenal’s last significant eruption occurred in 2000 at which time the town of Fortuna was evacuated and 2 people exploring the crater lost their lives. Arenal rises 1633 meters above sea level. The cone is surrounded ; by an extensive man-made lake with a multitude of water sports and other tourist activities as well re sort spas and vacation retreats.
On clear nights Arenal puts on an awesome display of fireworks and the lava flow can be seen from the town as well as many mountain-side lodges.
