Between volcanoes and rainforests
Forests where quetzals take refuge, fertile plains, and volcanoes looming in the distance characterize the northern landscape. The four volcanic giants who reign over this region are Rincón de la Vieja, Tenorio, Miravalles and Arenal.
Arenal Volcano At their feet, there are places full of life and enchantment to discover. Thanks to a climate generous in rain, the always green rainforests, the lakes, the wetlands and the plains are sanctuaries for a multitude of water birds, reptiles, mammals and insects. Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge, La Selva Biological Station, Arenal volcano, the Rio Sarapiqui and the north side of Rincón de la Vieja are some of the best places to see wildlife.
Rural life is also rich in this region of farmers and ranchers who have not lost their campesino essence despite the recent rise in touristic development. In the following pages you will find a variety of rural communities where you can experience country life and discover nature, led by those who know it best.
