Begin with Playa Tamarindo in the tocan of the same name and then make your way up the coast on the highway that will take you a bit inland. Playa Tamarindo is a mecca for surfers and gets quite busy during high season. Accommodations are plentiful as are eateries. The currents are strong and make for good surfing. Swimming is recommended for early morning or late afternoon.

Playa Conchal Costa Rica
Playa Conchal
Don't miss Playa Conchal, Flamingo and Pan de Azucar. Playa del Coco is very popular with Costa Ricans since it is easily accessible and has quite a few establishments set up in the area. The surf is easygoing and makes swimming enjoyable. Three kilometers north you'll find Playa Hermosa curving up the coast.

Tide pools for exploring on one end and a rustic fishing village on the other provide for great photographs. Just up the coast lies Bahia Culebra (Snake Bay) that has its own assortment of beautiful beaches. Playa Hermosa begins the list of great places to explore. Lying tucked among low hills and ocean chiseled boulders lies Playa Panama. This beach offers camping facilities for those who don't want to be far away from the water.

Guanacaste and Nicoya Peninsula

From Playa Avellana lying just below Tamarindo you can head for the beaches of the mid-Pacific refion. While virtually all of the beaches in Costa Rica are extraordinary, each region's unique vegetation make the scenery beautiful and exotic.

From Avellana to Playa Lagarto, the shoreline offers superb surroundings and excellent water fun. Tour operators supply sea kayaks that are a must on the Pacific coast. Playa Osteonal is a wonderful white sand beach that, aside from the spectacular scenery, boasts consistent sightings of turtles.

The best months for viewing these beautiful marine creatures are during August to September. Surfers are also in for a treat and will see a good mix of right and left waves. Further down Playa Camaronal, Playa Barrigona, Nosara and Samara are just the ticket for sunfilled days.
