For thousands of years, people have been harnessing the power of the wind; whether in the form of sails attached to boats or windmills to grind grain. Today, modern technology has allowed us to convert the power of the wind into electricity. Clean, cheap, and endlessly renewable, wind energy is one of the alternative energy sources that Costa Rica’s continues to develop in order to reduce the nation’s dependence on expensive and environmentally harmful fossil fuels.
Wind Electricity in Tilaran The wind farms at Tilaran are a collection of over 100 wind turbines spread over four projects administrated by ICE, the national energy provider. Tilaran is uniquely situated on Costa Rica’s central mountain range, and enjoys a constant southeasterly breeze from dusk to dawn. Look around the hillsides and you will see all the trees bent over double from the force of the wind!
As the air flows past the turbine rotors, it spins them and drives the shaft of an electric generator. Towering up to heights of 40 meters, each wind turbine can generate power sufficient for over 750 households. Like futuristic giants, they watch over the landscape and quietly provide us with the energy we have now come to take for granted.
