The Costa Rican Energy Institute (ICE) is building a geothermic energy plant next to the Rincon de la Vieja national park in Guanacaste. The new plant will have modern technology that allows it to perforate the wells diagonally and thus occupy minimal space.
Rincon de la Vieja National Park The geothermic plant, Las Pailas, will provide approximately 35 megawatts of energy beginning in 2011, which will be enough to provide electricity to around 100,000 people.
Geothermic energy utilizes steam deposits found in the earth's crust to produce energy. When such deposits are opened, the steam is released at a speed of about 100 km/h. This great speed serves to move the turbines that generate the electricity.
