In 1847 the postal service was consolidated and need a building for the Post Office at San Jose, to which belong all the others postal offices of the country.

During the first decade of the XX Century, the government take steps for the construction of the Central Post Office that also must include the telegraphic system. Two companies offered: A. L. Moreno and The English Construction Co. Ltd. By Decree Number 51, in April 24th 1914, the awarding of the project was for The English Construction Co. Ltd, for an amount of 27.114 English Pounds.

The contract was signed the August 7th 1914 during the administration of Lic. Alfredo Gonzalez Flores, by the Financial Minister and Commerce, Mariano Guardia and Robert E. Smith.

In 1917 was concluded the building and in October the staff occupied the installations. On October 14th 1980, was declared the "Edificio Central de Correos of San Jose" as Relic of Historic and Architectonic Value. Five years later, in 1985, the Philatelic Museum was created, to rescue the historic Costa Rican Patrimony and the history-architectonic in this building and what represent the communications services established at there to our society.
