ICAFE The Costa Rica Coffee Institute (Instituto Costarricense del Café) was created in 1948 -originally under the name of Oficina del Café. This is a semiautonomous institution in charge of providing technical assistance, undertaking field research, supervising receipts and processing of coffee, recording export contracts and fixing coffee prices for growers.
The ICAFE's funding comes from a tax charged on all exported coffee. The institute plays an important role by promoting Costa Rican coffee around the world. Between 1997 and 1998, Costa Rica's coffee traveled to the following coffee exhibitions and symposiums:
- Coffee & Tea Exhibition(Vienna, Austria)
- XV Coffee Annual Conference and Exhibition (London, England)
- Coffee Fest (New York)
- Coffee Fest (Chicago, Illinois)
- European Coffee, Tea & Cocoa (Munich, Germany)
CICAFE
The Center for Coffee Research (CICAFE) belongs to the Costa Rican Coffee Institute. It was created in 1977 to ensure applied field investigation, efficient technical assistance to growers, and research activities.
The CICAFE's efforts have helped improve the efficiency of coffee plantations by providing adequate control measures against pests and diseases, nutrition level upgrades, and special programs for genetic improvements. Today, Costa Rica's coffee farms have one of the highest standards of living among Latin American countries.
