Coffee is one of Costa Rica's main export products and foreign exchange earners. The total coffee area is estimated at about 100,000 hectares, located in the Meseta Central and on the surrounding mountain slopes. There are approximately 50,000 coffee farms.

Average productivity for the whole country is 2,6 million 60-kilogram bags; a total of 2,3 million bags are for export, and the remaining 300,000 bags are for internal consumption.

There are approximately 100 coffee processing firms (known as 'beneficios'). Nearly 125,000 families work in the coffee industry, and 15% of foreign earnings are derived from this activity.
