Pueblo Antiguo Costa Rica
Pueblo Antiguo was inaugurated in 1994 with the objective of offering its visitors an extraordinary personal experience of the daily life in Costa Rica in past centuries and the idea of saving Costa Rican culture and traditions. Pueblo Antiguo recreates the ambiance of XIII - XX century Costa Rica in a true form with great care given to the construction, detail, and artifacts that are on display. Life in rural, urban and coastal areas is depicted.
What can be seen
The buildings were constructed to scale and may be seen inside and out. They are a faithful reflection of how life was between the 1800's and 1900's, for example. The park is a copy of what it was like in the beginning of the XX century in the center of the capital (San Jose). In the rural section there is a dairy with the utensils used by our country folk and an Indian dwelling constructed of authentic materials utilized by the tribes located in the Talamanca area. Nearby is a more than one hundred year old house constructed by hand with axes that was disassembled and brought to the Amusement Park.
In the coastal section, you may appreciate the vegetation, especially from the Atlantic side. In the green zones there are trees such as the Poró and mango as well as cultivated plants such as coffee, banana, plantain and cocoa.
And how may you experience this? In the pulperÃa (a neighborhood Mom and Pop grocery store) original products of those times such as "gofios" (an old-time candy), toasted cookies, hard candy sticks, pewter mugs, ceramic figurines, etc. Also, there are typical animals such as oxen, horses, and chickens all in a 100% genuine atmosphere. One can see some exotic animals such as toucans, macaws, parrots and turkeys. Beside the architecture, the visitor can enjoy shows based on Costa Rican personal experiences, dances, stories and music filled with joy and national pride.
"Tico" shows
Throughout the day, theatrical works and folkloric dances are presented at different spots throughout the "city". One of the specialties of this place is the "Costa Rican Nights" Tour. On this tour, a journey is made through the music (of the Caribbean, of the city and the Guanacaste Province), the different dances and stanzas or refrains of our country. It attempts to revive in a pleasant way the nights during which the people gathered to share their music and joy.
There is no excuse not to enjoy this tour, seeing as it includes transportation and dinner in the "El Ventolero" restaurant, which specializes in international and Costa Rica cuisine. And the guide will be happy to tell you the story of each of the sections that comprise Old Town. Another show is the "Costa Rican Personal Experience", a bilingual show about the aspects of political, economic and social life that influenced Costa Rica. This presentation is performed only upon prior request.
