Feel the wind blow your cares away as you cut through air and water, observing a golden landscape that brings together the sun and lush mountains at Arenal Volcano lake.
The Arenal area, occupying a point between the provinces of Alajuela, Guanacaste and Puntarenas, is well-known around the world for its strong winds and great conditions for professional-level windsurfing.
The size of the lake is approximately 72 square kilometers, providing plenty of space to lose yourself in the emotions of windsurfing. For the biggest thrills, check out the west side of the lagoon.

Along with Lake Arenal, there are said to be only 5 locations worldwide that have all the specific elements that create such a prime windsurfing destination. With easily the best conditions to practice the sport in all of Central America, international speed enthusiasts come to enjoy the winds ranging from 30 to 45 miles per hour.
With the broad expanse of deep blue water surrounded by sloping green hills, the site is idyllic enough as it is, but the bright, colorful sails crisscrossing the lake produce an added charm. For peak wind seasons, visit the lake between November and April, but the rainy months bring milder conditions that make Arenal a perfect spot for beginners.
The best windsurfing spots are the north and northwest extremes of the lake about ten minutes from Tilarán, where you will find two places dedicated to equipment rental.
Local lodges cater to the growing number of windsurfing visitors, renting equipment and offering comfortable accommodations, ranging from moderate to expensive. Although ocean windsurfing isn't as popular as plying the waters of Lake Arenal, it is also possible to take rented equipment to either coast.
Come to Arenal, let the wind whisper in your ear and take your cares away!
