For Lee and Karen Fairchald, two windsurfers from Houston, Texas, Lago Arenal ended up being more than what they had expected. "Big waves, big wind! It's the best! But it's hard sailing, it's not for beginners, but for professionals. You need technique and a lot of strength to manage it" said Lee, who has been practicing the sport for four years.
Although Lago Arenal already has a world-class name, it isn't crowded in the high season, probably because people don't know about the potentials for sport to be found in its waters.
For those who want to practice bump and jump sailing it will be great. But I have a word of advice for those visiting the zone -- if you don't know how to windsurf, don't try to come here to learn!".
Beginners can go to Charrarra, where the wind is slower and the conditions a little more controllable.
Karen, Lee's wife, was amazed by the experience, but also a little bit scared by the cahllenge presented by the waves and the force of the wind.
There should be more people here, this place is wonderful and has a large growth potential. Well, sincerely, we didn't know what exactly we were going to find... now we do!"
The Fairchalds are in Costa Rica to improve their abilities by attending Rhonda's technique clinics, which will be taking place in the lake in the first two weeks of February.
This isn't for beginners. I'm in the intermediate level and even so, sometimes the power of the wind takes me by surprise. Sometimes I go into the lake without knowing if I'll be able to make it back to land. Arenal isn't just exciting, it also offers a refreshing and lively landscape," commented Karen.
These Texans emphasized that Tico Wind has excellent equipment and that the lake, despite the surprises, is a safe place. Will they come back? "Sure!" was their answer.
