Jean Paul Cazedessus, one of the owners and windsurf instructors of the Tilawa Hotel, has been living in Arenal for seven years. His life sliding over nature's smooth surfaces started when he was 12 and snow skied; right now one of his passions is to slide at high speed from one side to the other of Arenal Lake, playing with the wind.
He describes successful windsurfing in the lake as a stroke of luck, because nature provides stronger or weaker winds, and man has to adapt to its desires and enjoy what it offers. "Windsurfing is total movement, in which you have the power you need in your hands to pull you at up to 60 km/h and then raise you five meters over the water level" says Jean Paul.
The average wind speed at Arenal is between 30 and 40 km. and is stronger in the morning. According to Cazedessus, any time of the year is good for windsurfing at Arenal; nevertheless between May and October the wind slows down and rain affects performance. Between November and March the winds are considered stable and offer good possibilities for those wishing to jump, turn or slide at very high speeds.
