Ten years ago a group of people began sailing in Arenal, without knowing much about it; we didn't know about equipment, techniques or anything; we just knew for sure that we liked windsurfing", said Carlos Arrea, one of the country's most faithful sportsman.
The area was "still unknown as a windsurf spot, until a journalist from Windsurf Magazine met that group and wrote the first article about Lake Arenal around 1985", said Arrea.
The article emphasized the greatness of this zone, even classifying the place as among the best in the world. Thanks to this article more and more visitors came from all around the world."

As Arrea explained, the lake is located between two mountain ranges that come together in a funnel-like shape, bringing strong winds to the lake. Another advantage of the Arenal , especially on the west side where Tico Wind is located, that if somebody has an accident or his equipment somehow breaks, the wind will take him/her to the shore with almost no effort.
"You have a warm climate, with warm winds. The tourists appreciate this a lot, because they're normally fleeing from winter", added Arrea.
Arrea, a lawyer by profession, is almost a local. He stays at Arenal every weekend. "It's a passionate sport that you can practice with your family, and the advantages of Arenal make it even more enjoyable," he concluded.
