Wanna surf? A first-timer’s account of account of her thrills and spills.
“I arrived at Hide tide full of enthusiasm. As I checked out the variety of surfboard sizes, colors, and designs a voice with a sparkling smile surprised me. “Hi, I’m your guide. My name is Eleazar Abdalah. Are you ready?” After a few simple instructions we climbed onto our all-terrain vehicles and headed for the waves. Our package consisted of and ATV and surf tour the perfect combination of surf and turf.
The trip to Playa Grande was a fun ride. We detoured off the road and onto a dirt shortcut; perfect conditions for an all terrain vehicle with lots of mud, turns, potholes, and adrenaline. Any car’s night mare and every adventure’s dream!

Surfing in Playa Grande
We arrived at Playa Grande (part of the Las Baulas natural reserve north of Tamarindo), unloaded the boards off the special rack on Eleazar’s quad and headed for the action. The good company of the guide made me feels like I was with a friend giving me the confidence to learn, and since every surfer has to have her list class and first falls, everything depended on my attitude and willingness to try. Eleazar put the board down onto the sand and demonstrated the way to paddle with my arms and in slow motion how I should stand up.
I did it a few times until I was ready for the water, but standing up on a wave is something else altogether! Of course, as I had guessed managed to stand up, I felt like a surf goddess. Even if I was far cry from being one, it helped my confidence. Eleazer pushed my board as the wave came in and yelled, “Go now! Now!” a medium-sized wave began to swell under my barely paddling arms when I felt the wave take me up in her embrace, and I was able to revel in her extraordinary energy. I felt sufficiently relaxed to manage to get up and advance in perfect harmony with the wave until the beach.
I was overjoyed! Even though I was exhausted, I couldn’t help but rush back to catch another wave.
This tour can be taken in groups, and according to the experience of the surfer, you can take the quads to beaches with bigger waves like Playas Negra or Avellanas, or beaches more for beginners, like Tamarindo.
